Kilworth Springs v SDP Stags March 18th 2024
Stags v Atherstone February 28th
Wednesday 28th February, saw us have our final home match of the 2023/24 AWOWS Winter League which was against Atherstone. Atherstone came to us lying in second place in the league (just 1 point behind The Windmill) and were looking to push on towards the title. They also had the additional incentive of seeking revenge against us as in the match at Atherstone in early January we had been the first team ever to defeat them at their course in the league since it commenced. Having not played a match since the 26th of January, during which time we have had 3 cancellations (including one against Oakridge which has had to be declared as an uncontested draw) due to courses being closed because of the weather, it was with relief that our match could proceed as planned. The weather on the day was mainly dry with a few light showers and the course was very wet in places (1st,3rd, 10th and 18th in particular) after all the rain we have had over the past 2 months but at least the greens were receptive.
Paul and I had an excellent 7&6 win which was largely based on a great start as we were 5 Up after only 6 holes with both of us battling on each hole to see who could finish the hole first for the win. Paul had to go and get his back support from the car before we could tee off on the 10th much to the consternation of the opposition who wondered how many they would have been down if he had been fit. In the second match Bill/Mick struggled and were always behind (5 down at one point) but hung on well and fought back to only lose by 3&2. Mike/Michael followed this up with a good 2&1 win having never been behind in their match. As we sat in the clubhouse awaiting the next group to finish the question being debated within the SDP players was could we actually do the double over Atherstone - even Johnny was getting involved. David entered the clubhouse and with a long face came over to the captains table to announce that he and Mike had only won by 2&1 but should have closed the match out earlier. When Mike arrived he had to correct us on the scoreline as it was in fact a 3&1 win but he did agree that the margin should have been more. The last pair of Jim/Barry suffered a 4&3 defeat due mainly to a putting masterclass by their opponents. Smiles all round for SDP players with the final result being a 3 to 2 win for Stoneleigh and we had done the double. To cap off the day Michael Quinn won the bottle of Stoneleigh Chardonnay in the nearest the pin competition on the 9th which was for all the players from both clubs.
In the clubhouse afterwards we had a few drinks and a meal consisting of steak pie, chips, garden peas and gravy. Our meal was interrupted by a phone call from The Windmill who wanted to know the result of our match as they had just been beaten at home by Oakridge. Having given them the good news of our win meaning they stayed top of the league with one match to go it then became apparent that in fact if results went the right way in the last matches any one of 4 teams including Stoneleigh could in fact win the league. The Captain's speeches finished the day's activities before everyone headed off for home.
Thanks to all those Stags who made themselves available for the day and to the team for their efforts on the day.
Team on the day : David Templeton, Paul Steward, Bill Griffin, Mick Lloyd, Mike Gilbey, Michael Quinn, David Gibbs, Mike Smith, Jim Jobson, and Barry Gill.
The Final Match of the AWOWS Winter League was to have been away at Whitefields who are bottom of the league but unfortunately it has had to be cancelled as it is carry only today and with the forecast it is certain to be the same tomorrow. Due to difficulties in being able to arrange a new date before 8th March for various reasons it was therefore agreed that the match would be declared an uncontested draw meaning that we can no longer win the league.
Season Results : Summer W7, D2, L9
AWOWS Winter League W3, D2, L3

Stags Christmas Comp & Lunch
Monday 4th December, the date for Stags to show their mettle, battle against the elements, ignore rain, cold and wet ground to battle out for the prestigious title of Stags Christmas Champions. This year chaos reigned, too may options were given to Stags on the day. The course had been closed over the weekend and the weather forecast was dire, however the Par three course was declared open on the morning and instead of insisting that all Stags who entered should turn up the weak, lily livered Competition Secretary gave them an out, and 23 wimpish Stags accepted this way out and only turned up in time for lunch. This left 23 Stags to be reorganised into teams of three and play the competition. Unfortunately in the chaos all rules of fairness went out the window and groups were picked in a more random, less disciplined way leaving some unbalanced groups in terms of handicap.
However it did not rain and everyone who played enjoyed it.
The results on the day were:
1 | D | Lole | D | Templeton | P | Manger | 78 |
2 | P | Glendinning | R | Shah | R | Walker | 79 |
3 | K | James | B | Gill | D | Ridley | 80 |
4 | C | Yapp | M | Quinn | P | Jamieson | 80 |
5 | A | Brushett | P | Steward | S | Cranage | 81 |
6 | R | Parham | D | Grover | D | Spillane | 83 |
7 | C | Seeley | K | Riley | M | Lloyd | 84 |
8 | N | Palmer | M | Smith | 96 |
After the competition the wimps turned up and we had an enjoyable Christmas Lunch, enjoyed reading the Captain's Christmas Greeting to all Stags, doing a bit of a quiz and generally baiting the wimps. The presentation of Summer Trophies then took place after a presentation by the Captain to our esteemed Club Secretary. The trophy winners presented on the day were as follows
Ces Dowson Trophy Brodie Aziz
Ken Dunlop Cup Rohit Shah
Seniors over 55 Trophy Roy Walker
Bill Jones Trophy Nick Kirby and Barry Gill
Beere & O'Neill Shield Paul Abbott
Stone Trophy Chris Seeley
Dermot Hurley Trophy England
John Reay Trophy Chris Seeley and Paul Steward
Bill Collier Cup Steve Cranage
3rd Place Order of merit Chris Seeley
2nd Place order of Merit Dave Lole
The Captain then made a presentation to the retiring Competition Secretary who on the basis of this mornings chaos should have been fired a long time ago.
